Lately the news has been full of stories about unrest all over New Eden. The latest is about a Caldari scientist, Hirento Autinen, who has supposedly “defected” to the Gallente by accepting a position with a Federation firm. Kaalakiota earned itself some rather scathing remarks from Autinen, who seemed to have nothing against repeating them in public, so I suppose the Caldari feel insulted. State Navy ships just about came into conflict with private Gallente vessels at the border when Autinen tried to make the journey into the Federation. There’s talk about mercenaries and assassins even!
I don’t particularly understand the Caldari in this, nor much else. Perhaps this is because I don’t consider myself “Gallente” despite what the sociologists in the Federation would prefer me to say. I am, first and foremost, Intaki. And while certain other factions would have everyone believe that all Intaki are Caldari-loving, Federation-hating people, I do not find myself having any particularly strong affinity for the Caldari either.
Of course, all through my training the Caldari have been portrayed as “the enemy”, and while I can understand where the deep-seated hatred and resentment between the Gallente and the State comes from, I wonder why such strong feelings should have anything to do with where one person (from billions!) chooses to live. If Autinen wants to move to the Federation and work for Chemal Tech, he obviously no longer feels any loyalty or connection to the community he came from. Why should the State care to keep him in that case? I would just as soon as get rid of anyone in my life who adopted total disregard for me.
But then, I know such matters are more complicated than this. It is an insult to the State for any of its citizens to reject Caldari society in favor of the one which their ancestors tried so hard to escape and separate themselves from. Autinen is saying Kaalakiota has no honor, and the State is no home for him, by making the choice he’s made. He’s snubbing his nose at them, so naturally they feel betrayed.
And…who is to say what State or megacorp secrets he might be bringing with him? I’m sure the Feds will be quite interested to have a conversation with this scientist in short order.
All of this tension, unrest at the border, rioting in Minmatar space… What are the winds of change bringing us?
